On September 1st, a switch flips. It is not gradual. One day it's still summer and the next day every single person you know has posted a photo of a candle, and the candle is named something like "Haunted Library."
Spooky szn has begun. There is no appeal process.
Why September 1st and not October 1st
The official position is that Halloween is an October holiday. The lived reality is that October is where spooky season ends. Everything before it is buildup, and buildup is the best part of any holiday — ask anyone who has ever enjoyed a Christmas Eve more than a Christmas.
September is when the buildup gets to run at full strength. The decorations go up but nothing has happened yet. The horror movie list is written but unwatched. The costume is an idea, not a problem you have to solve. Nothing has gone wrong. Nobody has cried in a parking lot about a mask that itches.
Also, practically: if you wait until October to buy anything, you're competing with everyone else who waited until October. Printing queues get long. Shipping gets slow. The shirt shows up on November 2nd and you feel foolish. September buyers wear their stuff for two months. October buyers wear it once.
What "spooky szn" actually means to people
It's worth naming, because it isn't really about horror.
Plenty of people who are all-in on spooky season do not like being scared. They like the aesthetic — the dark, the cozy, the candles, the sweaters, the specific quality of light in the late afternoon. They like a season with permission to be a little strange. They like that the whole culture briefly agrees that skeletons are funny.
"Spooky szn" is shorthand for all of that, which is why the phrase spread the way it did. It's not a horror announcement. It's a mood announcement.
