Spooky Szn tee for Summerween

Summerween Is Real: Why Halloween Starts in August Now

Somebody put out a skeleton in early August and the internet lost its mind again. Same argument every year. "It's too early." "Let people enjoy things." "It's 94 degrees outside." "And?"

We're going to settle this: Summerween is real, it's been real for a while, and August is a completely reasonable time to start.

What Summerween actually is

Summerween started as a joke and became a season. The short version: Halloween is the best holiday, October is only 31 days long, and that math has never been acceptable to the people who care most. So they moved the start line. Now spooky season begins somewhere around the second week of August, when the back-to-school displays go up and everyone collectively decides summer is emotionally over.

You can see it in the data every year. Pumpkin decor sells in August. Halloween candy hits shelves before Labor Day. Craft stores have skeletons out while the pools are still open. This isn't a fringe thing — it's just the calendar most people are actually living on.

The reason it caught on is simple. Halloween is the only major holiday with no obligations attached. No family dinner. No gift list. No performance of gratitude. You put on something weird, eat sugar, and are left alone. Of course people want more of it.

The August problem, and the solution

The obstacle to celebrating Halloween in August has always been temperature. You cannot wear a hoodie in a heat index of 100. You cannot put a toddler in a fleece dinosaur costume in a parking lot in Texas. This is why Summerween needed its own wardrobe rather than just an early start on October's.

The answer is short sleeves with spooky content. Obvious in hindsight.

Spooky Szn, in the weight you can actually wear right now

The Spooky Szn Unisex Tee and Spooky Szn Women's Tee are the whole thesis in one garment. Declares your allegiance. Does not cook you alive. Wear it to Target in August and get knowing nods from strangers in the seasonal aisle.

When it does eventually cool off — and it will, around late September, briefly, before warming back up — the Spooky Szn Unisex Hoodie is waiting.

Spooky Scary

The Spooky Scary Unisex Crewneck is the transitional piece. Crewnecks occupy the strange middle of the year where mornings are cold and afternoons are not, which is exactly the weather Summerween runs on.

The reading crossover nobody planned

Here's a thing we didn't design on purpose: Buy Me Books turned out to be deeply Summerween-coded. Spooky season and reading season are the same season. Everyone with a horror TBR pile knows the exact date they start it, and that date is in August.

The Women's Tee, the Unisex Hoodie, and the Women's Crop Hoodie all live in both worlds. Gothic romance, haunted house novels, one very specific Shirley Jackson reread you do every year — this is the shirt for that stretch.

The counterargument, addressed

People who object to August Halloween usually make one of two arguments. The first is that it "ruins" October by front-loading it. This has never happened to anyone. October arrives just as strong.

The second is that seasonal creep is a retail conspiracy. Partially true! But the reason it works is that people genuinely want it. Nobody has ever been forced at gunpoint to buy a skeleton in August. They bought it because they were happy about it.

Also, if we're being consistent, nobody complains that Christmas decorations go up the day after Halloween. Halloween gets one month and is expected to be grateful. Summerween is a correction.
